Data Visualization for Advocacy
Fall 2024, Information Design

For this social advocacy assignment, I focused on highlighting the alarming rates of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and mortality, particularly among Black women in the U.S. My task involved researching and collecting data, then creating a visual representation tailored to policy-makers and healthcare professionals. This target audience influenced the clean, professional aesthetic of my design, though my personal style shines through in my use of color and typography.

Using two datasets, I processed the data in Google Sheets to generate initial graphs. After comparing results, I redesigned the charts in Illustrator to elevate their visual clarity. My findings revealed a strong correlation: hospitals with higher Medicaid patient rates also experience increased SMM, particularly among Black patients. Many of these cases are preventable, underscoring the urgent need for improved access to quality care for women of color.
